Stop Armpit Sweat: 12 Tips That Really Work
You know the feeling. You quickly check in the mirror for wet patches under your arms before you leave the house. That morning, you deliberately choose not to wear a light blue shirt. And as soon as things get tense, in a meeting or on a date, you feel it coming again. Underarm sweat is annoying, it saps your energy, and it can really chip away at your self-confidence.
First of all: you're not alone. Approximately 1 in 20 people in the Netherlands suffer from excessive sweating. And sweating itself is perfectly healthy; it's simply how your body regulates its temperature. It only becomes a problem when it's more than necessary, or occurs at inconvenient times.
The good news: there's a lot you can do about it. Below you'll find 12 tips that really work, from the right products to small adjustments in your daily life. No miracle cures, but a practical approach that will make your armpits drier and your mind calmer.
Why do you sweat under your armpits?
Your armpits contain a relatively large number of sweat glands, which respond not only to heat but also to emotion and stress. The sweat itself is almost odorless. The familiar body odor only arises when bacteria on your skin break down the sweat. For some, these glands are more active than for others, partly due to genetics, partly due to hormones, lifestyle, and stress. That's why no single tip works perfectly on its own, but a combination does.
1. Choose an antiperspirant, not a regular deodorant
This is the most important distinction. A deodorant masks odor. An antiperspirant inhibits sweat production itself, as aluminum salts temporarily narrow the opening of the sweat gland. If you truly suffer from wet patches, you need an antiperspirant, not just a fragrance. When choosing, look for a formula that stays within European limits (maximum 6.25% aluminum in non-spray) and is gentle on the skin.
2. Apply it in the evening, not in the morning
This surprises many people. An antiperspirant works best when applied in the evening to clean, dry skin, just before bed. At night, your sweat glands are less active, allowing the formula to work effectively. In the morning, rinse briefly with water. The protection will remain. If you apply it in a hurry in the morning to already moist skin, you'll almost immediately wash away the effect.
3. Wear breathable, natural fabrics
Cotton, linen, and bamboo allow your skin to breathe and absorb moisture. Synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon do the opposite: they trap heat and moisture, causing you to sweat more and faster. Opt for natural materials whenever possible, especially on warm days or during stressful appointments.
4. Consider color and fit
Sweat stains are most noticeable on light colors like light gray and light blue. White and black hide them better. And clothing that fits a bit looser allows heat to escape more easily than a tight shirt. A small detail, but it makes a difference when you don't want to worry.
