Sweaty hands (clammy hands): why you get them and what helps

Shaking someone's hand while wondering how clammy it feels. A pen slipping during an exam. A phone screen unresponsive because your fingers are too moist. Sweaty hands are one of the most visible, and socially most awkward, forms of excessive sweating, precisely because hands so often come into direct contact with other people and objects.

Why are hands so prone to sweating?

Your palms, along with your soles, are among the areas with the highest density of sweat glands on your body. This is functional: moist palms naturally provide a little more grip, a remnant from an evolutionary past where grip literally was crucial for survival.

The problem is that these sweat glands, unlike, for example, your armpits, are extremely sensitive to emotional triggers. Palms and soles contain many eccrine sweat glands that react strongly to your nervous system, meaning that tension, nervousness, and stress translate rapidly into visible and palpable sweat in these areas.

The strong link with stress and emotion

With sweaty hands, emotion plays a larger role than with almost any other body part. While underarm sweat can also arise from heat and exertion, hands are extremely sensitive to the emotional component: a job interview, a first date, an exam, or giving a presentation can all cause noticeably clammy hands within seconds.

This works through the same mechanism as the vicious cycle that also occurs with other stress-related sweating: the thought of a handshake or a moment where your hands become visible can in itself create enough tension to trigger the sweat response. You can read more about this mechanism, and how to break it, in [The vicious cycle of sweating and stress].

Practical tips for the moment

Breathe consciously and calmly, especially right before a moment when you know your hands will be important, such as a handshake or a presentation. Slow, deep breathing helps calm your nervous system before tension fully builds up.

Do not rigidly keep your hands still or hidden. This sounds counterintuitive, but consciously hiding your hands (in your pockets, behind your back) actually maintains attention and tension. Normal, relaxed movements often help more, paradoxically.

Dry your hands briefly before an important contact moment, for example with a tissue, instead of nervously rubbing them on your trousers right before, which is ineffective and can be visible.

The product

One wipe. Up to five days dry.

Discrete anti-perspirant wipes, individually wrapped in a plastic-free sachet. Apply in the evening, ready for the next day.

Up to five days of protection per wipe

Hold something cool if possible, like a cold glass of water. A lower skin temperature can temporarily reduce sweat production.

Structural approach

For those who regularly experience clammy hands, not only during stressful moments but also at rest, a targeted approach can offer more than just momentary tricks.

Antiperspirant with aluminum salts can, just like on the armpits, also be applied to the palms to reduce sweat production. It is important to note that the skin of your hands is used more intensively than your armpits: frequent washing, contact with water, and physical contact with objects and people. This means that a formula applied in the evening and effective for several days can be more practical than a product you would constantly have to reapply during the day to a body part you are continuously using.

The Zero·One antiperspirant wipes are suitable for hands, as well as armpits, feet, and other body parts. Apply in the evening to clean, dry hands, let dry for five minutes without rubbing, and wash off the next morning.

When is it more than "just" being nervous?

If your hands consistently feel clammy, even in calm, non-stressful situations, and this has been the case for a long time, it may be a more persistent form of excessive hand sweating that goes beyond incidental nervousness. This frequently occurs in combination with similar complaints in the feet and often has a hereditary component.

If this limits your daily functioning, for example with work involving a lot of hand contact, paperwork, or using equipment, a conversation with your GP can reveal what additional options are available.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my hands get clammy during a handshake, but not the rest of the day? This indicates a strong emotional/stress-related trigger, as palms are extremely sensitive to nervous system activity around specific, tense moments.

Can I use an antiperspirant on my hands like on my armpits? Yes, provided the product is declared suitable for this. The Zero·One antiperspirant wipes are suitable for hands, among other body parts.

Why do my hands sometimes feel cold and clammy at the same time? This can occur during a strong stress reaction, where blood vessels constrict (cold feeling) while sweat glands remain active (clammy feeling). This is a normal, albeit unpleasant, combination during tension.

Does washing my hands more often help with sweaty hands? Washing temporarily removes existing sweat but has no effect on underlying sweat production. Excessive washing can also dry out the skin.

Are sweaty hands often linked to sweaty feet? Yes, in people with a hereditary predisposition to excessive sweating, complaints in hands and feet often occur together due to the similar density of sweat glands in both areas.
